In a world full of obesity, nobody told me I could over exercise.

In a world full of obesity, nobody told me I could over exercise.

The benefits of exercise are outstanding. It lowers blood pressure, helps you sleep, improves your bone and muscle mass, lowers stress, gives endorphins… just to name a few. My mistake is that I never took a break. I used exercise to counteract other eating mistakes from my day. Exercise was my stress reducer when I had already been on my feet all day moving and working physically. I didn’t know that I was doing anything wrong. Rest days were for lazy people.

Then I had to get a bone scan.

They told me exercise alone was breaking me. I’ve always loved health foods and routines to an unhealthy level, but I was pissed off that my exercise was breaking down my bone mass. After all, I had been doing all the exercise to help my body be the healthiest it could be. Nobody told me that hormone levels were everything. Exercise was my life. My hobby.

Low estrogen causes bones to become fragile due to less bone mineral density. But why? How? Estrogen helps with the production of bone-forming cells called osteoblasts. When there isn’t enough estrogen present, MAT is increased (which is a bone marrow adipose tissue type of fat deposited in bone marrow) which leads to less bone density and strength. Sooooo no estrogen, no bone health? Shouldn’t that have been mentioned somewhere before when they teach us to exercise? They tell us to drink milk, but they don’t tell us to pay attention to the signs  and symptoms our body gives us each day.
